Art – Divine Horses

The penultimate chapter of Anglo-Saxon Paganism on “Diversity and Death” discusses – amongst much else – the role of abstract art in early English culture, and in particular the referencing of divine, or semi-divine, man-horse-gods in such art. It is believed that the abstract image shown as one of two double horse images above is derived from an idealised portrayal of two horses standing up to each other. Possible meanings of such a display are discussed in that chapter.

The representational (non-abstract) double horse image above has been used as the logo for this web site. Information about this choice can be seen here.
