Art – ‘Great Goddess’ Migration Routes

A chapter in Anglo-Saxon Paganism looks at possible links between Freya as a ‘great goddess’ and other powerful female deities, including the goddess Inanna in ancient Sumeria, Phoenician Astarte, Isis of Egypt, and Aphrodite of Greece. The chapter reviews not just similarities in the reported nature, powers, interests and aspects of these goddesses, but also considers whether the concept of a supremely powerful or ‘great’ goddess could have migrated in cultural terms over both millennia and thousands of miles, to eventually connect ancient Sumerian and pre-Christian north European cultures.
